Yesterday was Dia de los locos, an annual costume parade/religious celebration/pagan cross-dressing free-for-all that began, as near as I can tell, because there are many stories, as a ceremony for orchard growers. The event is put on by the people of Colonia San Antonio, a neighborhood in San Miguel that years ago was an orchard. It is really like Mardi Gras. Well, Mardi Gras in Mexico. The day kicks off with a mass in the courtyard outside the San Antonio church. All the folks in costumes come for the mass, or at least stop inside the church before, to say a quick prayer. I didn't take pictures of the square filled with people in gorilla suits, clown suits, and men in mini-skirts, because the priest asked that no one take pix during the mass.
