Dinner party
It's not just Americans who come to SMA hoping to reinvent themselves.
Went to dinner at Donna's house last night. There was quite a crowd. Jeannie, of course, and her Jack Russell terrier named Rufus. Guillermo, who sells some sort of specially oxygenated water and necklaces that have a computer chip that is supposed to balance the frequencies in your body. A couple from Los Angeles who now own a local Italian restaurant. A woman who traveled the world setting up democracy groups and now owns a popular breakfast spot. A realtor who told a great story about swapping english lessons for tango lessons in brazil. Billy, a musician from Austin, and his girlfriend.
Donna made fantastic indian food: green beans with coconut, curried chicken, beans, a wild rice salad, regular rice with almonds, chutney and mint sauce. I got there early and helped her skin almonds and trim green beans. She wears swimmng goggles when she chops onions. Donna runs "grace and gratitude" circles and teaches classes in vibrational attraction. She also paints and plays guitar and writes songs. Practices yoga. Is all energy. And she's very excited to be visiting her boyfriend in the US today.
We sat in a circle in her living room, with our plates on our laps, and as soon as he finished eating, Billy picked up the guitar and started playing. Then the husband of the restaurant couple played. Then Donna. Then round again.
Guillermo gave me a ride home - I'm living clear on the other side of town. Very sweet happy guy. He spent most of his life in Mexico, then Queretero. He even lived in Milwaukee for a while, working for Allen Bradley. But he got divorced, lost his job, moved to San Miguel. He's only been here a little over a year, but it's going well. He has a girlfriend, and he passes out his cards to everyone. Jeannie and Donna are regular customers. He's kind of a spiritual/holistic fixer. Can sell you cures and introduce you to a shaman or a mystic. Business is good. "The universe provides," he says. This is a popular phrase here. "San Miguel, it's good. There are a lot of people here like me. A lot of people searching."
I'm feeling fortunate to be meeting so many people here so quickly.
