No es mi culpa

In Grammar Problems class this morning, we talked about verbos accidentales. This is the greatest concept, and it reveals a big difference between Mexican culture and the way we think in the US. When you want to convey that you have lost, dropped, or broke something; that you fell, or crashed the car, the subject of the sentence is the object that has been lost, dropped or broken. And here´s the good part: it is responsible for what happened. In other words, the earring that belonged to me lost itself. My glasses broke themselves. Etc.

No one wants an earring to go away or the milk to spoil when it´s left out of the fridge. But it happens. I like that one´s intention matters and that the language takes into account the thin line between taking responsibility and placing blame.

As my teacher said this morning, ¨Some things we cannot control.¨

How often do you hear that?
